Frock Coat, Victorian Merchant Navy Uniform
Frock Coat, Victorian Merchant Navy Uniform
This coat likely was used on a Peninsula & Oriental shipping liner around the mid-late 1890s.
However it appears that at some point, likely in the early 1900s, the braiding, buttons, and patches on the collar and lapels were added to make it closer resemble a military coat.
According to research conducted by the previous owner, the additions include:
- Patch on the left collar, bullion embroidered Second Lieutenant's rank pip.
- Patch on the right collar, Royal Engineer's bullion embroidered badge.
- Buttons, both Victorian and Edwardian Royal Navy, as well as an 1896-1901 Army Ordinance Corps button, though this is uncertain.
- Gold braiding on the lapels.
